There is nothing typical about this book. There is also more dark comedy in this than probably any other book I’ve done – but I have to balance that with massive battles and twisted perspective tales. There’s been a lot of spit, that’s for sure.

IGN: Does the nature of this book allow you to stretch your muscles in a different way than you would on a typical superhero book? Kolins: Larfleeze’s outrageous attitude does force me to be more… bold sometimes in character ways I usually haven’t done. Biggest challenge? Same as all the characters – make sure he stays interesting. IGN: Scott, how did you come on board this book? What’s the biggest challenge of doing a character like this? Kolins: Keith and I did some great Larfleeze back-ups in Threshold so DC asked us. IGN: Can we expect to see more of Larfleeze’s history in this book, or are we just moving forward? Giffen: A good bit of both with the focus on looking forward. That said, you do not have to have read the Threshold back-ups to get into Larfleeze #1. How can you not love that? IGN: Where do we find Larfleeze in this series? What’s his status quo after the events of the First Lantern story? Giffen: We pick up on Larfleeze just minutes after his Threshold back-up, depressed and bereft. I mean, he's the living embodiment of greed. There aren’t many books out there where the main character is a lunatic. The Orange Lantern Larfleeze's horrific recruitment process takes the most honorable part of DC's Green Lantern Corps and turns it into a fate quite literally worse than death.IGN Comics: Why Larfleeze? I think he’s a blast, but what’s appealing to you about the character? Scott Kolins: Something different. Larfleeze's Lanterns are stripped of autonomy and turned into ravenous beasts to help add to their awful ranks. They are united not under an ideal but by immeasurable avarice. His Lanterns don't join willingly, they are taken. Larfleeze's 'Corps,' on the other hand, is the ultimate perversion of this idea. It’s an honor to join the Green Lantern Corps, because it's a force united under one ideal: to protect the innocent from evil.

The demented Corps he's crafted isn't just nightmarish, it's a dark reflection of the noble Green Lanterns.Īll across the universe, beings who want to make the world better are recruited to join the most well-known peacekeeping organization. Aside from the fact that he holds the power of an entire Corps in his hands at all times with the Orange Power Battery, his constructs all operate off of a hive-mind mentality, an extension of Larfleeze's insatiable greed. The orange Green Lantern villain might be quirky, but Larfleeze has shown that he's a threat to be taken seriously. Larfleeze shows off his disturbing process by killing and inducting a Green Lantern into his corps. The paranoid and greedy alien attacks his enemies, under the idea that they've come to steal his ultimate treasure, the Orange Lantern Central Power Battery. Not one to lose anything that belongs to him, Larfleeze orders his constructs to attack the Lanterns. It turns out that because Larfleeze refuses to share his Orange Light's power, the constructs he creates serve as his 'Corps.' Even more unsettling, Larfleeze's team is made up of beings he's killed as punishment for attempting to take his power.

In Green Lantern #40 by Geoff Johns and Philip Tan, the Green Lantern Corps is forced to venture into the Vega System and deal with the extremely reclusive Orange Lantern Larfleeze. While there may only be one Orange Lantern in the entire DCU, that doesn't mean Larfleeze doesn't desire a Corps of his very own.
